The Educational Silk Museum aims at spreading the local textile culture to an ever increasing audience.
Moreover, the word “educational” underlines the strong relationship between the Museum and Schools. In fact, the location of the Museum, that is in the building of both Setificio Silk School and University, itself explains the connection between the past (the Museum and its machinery) and the future (the School that trains textile professionals).
Schools Service
The Museum undertakes its “mission” to spread the textile culture and awaken students to the history of the area through its educational role to schools at every level.
Guided tours are provided to Primary Schools (Book your visit) according to the pupils’ learning goals and age.
A more specialized guided tour of both textile machines and devices is offered to students attending Secondary and Technical Schools. Such tours focus on culture, history, art, textile techniques and manufacture both in Como and all over the world. Finally, the information from the guided tour is supported by educational videos.
Universities
University Students and Lecturers often show interest in the heritage on display and use documents of the Museum archives as research material for their studies and theses.
For final year students and graduates, it is also possible to serve an Internship at the Museum (Volunteer).
Adults and Families
The programmes for Adults and Families are important ways for the Museum to fulfil its educational mission by reaching an even greater audience. Here there is the possibility of arousing an interest in fabrics and fashion through leisure initiatives involving the whole family.
A number of interesting activities, such as seminars, meetings and exhibitions, are going to be organised at the Museum. Consequently, besides the traditional guided tour, laboratories and educational activities supporting various aspects of textile industry are going to be planned.
It will also be possible to visit factories or the so-called “Silk Route of Como”, and plan thematic visits to the historic background of the industrial and handicraft development better to understand how and why they were so popular.
Finally, the Museum has always had a particular interest in printing the books of its exhibitions and in editing its “Catalogue” (Publications).
